In addition to practicing their favorite sport, patrollers will have the task of assisting and guiding cyclists on the entire Acadian Peninsula bicycle network.

  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Have a bike and a helmet;
  • Have a cell phone.

 In addition, preparatory training is offered to volunteers in the areas of first aid, mechanics, prevention, tourist information and risk management. Those selected will have to demonstrate an aptitude for courtesy, an interest in physical activity and a sense of responsibility to the community.

"It doesn't matter if you are 18 or 70 years old, average 100 or 1,000 km of cycling per year! What we are looking for are committed people with varied schedules who live on the Peninsula," explains Robert Dugas, who is involved in the bike patrol/ambassador program. If you have any questions regarding this involvement, or if you wish to register, people interested in becoming a volunteer patroller/ambassador are invited to call 506-336-3463, or to write to the following address: info@veloroutepa.ca. Recruitment of candidates will continue until the 15th of March. An information session will follow before confirmation of selected candidates and the next steps. LOTTERY

A lottery to encourage physical health and education

The former members and friends of the Université de Moncton, Shippagan campus (AUMCS) and the Véloroute Péninsule acadienne have joined hands to launch a new lottery whose profits will go to students and cyclists in the region.

"This partnership between the two organizations will allow the AUMCS to improve its scholarship program to financially help future UMCS students and the Acadian Peninsula Cycling Route to maintain its new infrastructure and contribute to the physical health of the Acadian Peninsula community," said Gilles Lanteigne, president of the AUMCS.

"Véloroute Péninsule acadienne, a network of more than 600 km including 70 km off-road, is a recreational and tourist infrastructure that brings people together with benefits for physical and mental health, our environment and the economy. This lottery is part of a fundraising campaign to improve and maintain the quality of this cycling route for the population of the Peninsula and our visitors," said Ernest Ferguson, President of the Véloroute Péninsule acadienne.

At a cost of $100, each ticket makes you eligible for 12 draws for a first prize of $2,500, a second prize of $250 and a third prize of $100. Two draws will be held at the beginning of each month from September 1 to February 1. The winning tickets will be put back in the box for the following draws. In addition, the cash purchase of your ticket before August 15, 2021 will make you eligible for an additional draw of $2,500!

A maximum of 800 tickets will be sold. The names of the winners will be posted on the Facebook pages of the Université de Moncton, campus de Shippagan (UMCS), and the Véloroute Péninsule acadienne.

Tickets will be available at the UMCS bookstore from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at 506 336-3453, and at the Sports Experts store in Tracadie-Sheila during business hours. Transactions will be made by credit card. Tickets can also be purchased online at: www.veloroutepa.ca/impliquez-vous#11

If, in the opinion of the organizers, an insufficient number of tickets are sold by August 15, 2021 (432 tickets or less), they reserve the right to hold a one-time 50/50 draw.

Good luck to all and thank you for contributing to the post-secondary education of local youth and the physical health of the community.
